Hungarian Environment Minister and CEU Faculty Receives Honorary Fellowship

Zoltan Illes, Hungary’s state secretary of environmental protection, nature conservation and water management, has recently been made an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) at a ceremony which took place at the Hungarian Embassy in London on September 6. As well as having a successful parliamentary career, Dr. Illes is an associate professor of the CEU Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, and adjunct professor at the Godollo University of Agricultural Sciences.

New Scientist quotes research from Jessica Jewell on the future of nuclear power

Jessica Jewell's research on nuclear energy is quoted in this week's New Scientist. Her research, conducted as a Masters' thesis in the MESPOM program at the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, focuses on launching (or continuing to deploy) nuclear power in various nations.

Bridging the Gap: 3CSEP director participates in new report

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) will prepare a follow up publication to “The Emissions Gap Report.” Publication of the report preceded the climate change talks in Cancun, Mexico in 2010. The first report assessed the collective pledges of countries to keep global temperature below a 2 degree Celsius rise. In the new edition of the report, Professor Diana Urge-Vorsatz will be a co-author on the chapter focused on climate change mitigation options.

The Canadian Arctic is undergoing profound changes, affecting the fragile ecosystems, rhythm of life and the Inuit who depend on the land and sea for their traditional lifestyle. The Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy, and the Center for Environment and Security (CENSE) organized a public lecture by Paul Ashley, Ecosystem Scientist, Parks Canada Sirmilik and Auyuittuq National Parks. Ashley delivered a lecture at CEU on 30 March entitled “Monitoring Climate Change in Canadian Arctic National Parks,” on the effects of global warming on the Canadian Arctic. Brandon P.

Brenda Rashleigh is a Research Ecologist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Athens, Georgia, USA.  She obtained a B.S. in Biological Science from the University of Vermont, an M.S. in Environmental Science/Water Resources from Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee.  She worked for the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Assessment Program, Upper Tennessee River Basin, before coming to EPA in 1998.
