The Systems Laboratory aims at enabling use of latest Information and Communication Technologies in the areas of CEU core expertise. Special attention is paid to modeling of environmental and social systems and promoting use of geospatial technologies. Syslab develops and runs the graduate courses and workshops on use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing tailored for the needs of various CEU departments and units.

Syslab also conducts regular in-service trainings for practitioners and professionals on using ICTs in various domains, such as disaster management, water security, biodiversity conservation, among others. In order to keep up with latest developments and provide participants with first hands information, Syslab cooperates with global leaders in geospatial technologies, such as UN Office for OUter Space Affairs, UN Development Program, European Comission's Joint Reserach Center, Esri, Google. The Spatial Mapping and Analysis Reserach Group was launched by Syslab in 2012 to establish the platform for CEU community to cooperate on applying geospatial technologies in cross-departmental and multidisciplinary research.

Storytelling at “Talking maps"

Syslab's Spatial Mapping and Analysis Research Group (SMARG) and CEU University Wide Course "Introduction to Geospatial Data Visualization" have jointly organized the graduate conference “Talking Maps” on January 11th, 2019.

Experiential Learning through Internships

A project on Experiential Learning was successfully completed at Syslab within the Environmental Practicum course. The project, called “Experiential Learning through Internships and (guided) Reflection”, was supported by the CEU Teaching Development Grant. Its goal was to introduce a more structured reflection scheme and refinement of the Practicum course as a whole.

Syslab's students visit UN

This week Syslab organized a day long trip for participants of “Disaster Management” (DM) and “Introduction to Geospatial Analysis” courses to United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) at UN Headquarters in Vienna. UNOOSA is responsible for promoting international cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space. This UN office is also managing the United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER).

CEU at UN/Pakistan Conference on Use of Space Technologies

Dr Viktor Lagutov represented the Department at the UN / Pakistan / PSIPW International Conference on the Use of Space Technology for Water Management and contributed to the event;s organization as a member of the International Programme Committee. The Conference was held in Islamabad, Pakistan, from 26 February to 2 March 2018.

US Embassy round-table on wildlife trafficking

Head of CEU Systems Laboratory Dr. Victor Lagutov and Phd Candidate Natalia Pervushina contributed to the roundtable discussion on Wildlife Trafficking organized by the US Embassy in Hungary, Regional Environmental, Science & Technology, and Health (ESTH) Hub office on 21st November 2017.
