The Systems Laboratory aims at enabling use of latest Information and Communication Technologies in the areas of CEU core expertise. Special attention is paid to modeling of environmental and social systems and promoting use of geospatial technologies. Syslab develops and runs the graduate courses and workshops on use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing tailored for the needs of various CEU departments and units.

Syslab also conducts regular in-service trainings for practitioners and professionals on using ICTs in various domains, such as disaster management, water security, biodiversity conservation, among others. In order to keep up with latest developments and provide participants with first hands information, Syslab cooperates with global leaders in geospatial technologies, such as UN Office for OUter Space Affairs, UN Development Program, European Comission's Joint Reserach Center, Esri, Google. The Spatial Mapping and Analysis Reserach Group was launched by Syslab in 2012 to establish the platform for CEU community to cooperate on applying geospatial technologies in cross-departmental and multidisciplinary research.

CEU Syslab and UNDP continue their professional training program through the ISEPEI project focussing on the recent advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs). The workshop will assess how these advances are empowering both decision-makers and citizens to play a proactive role in managing disaster risk and providing a more effective response.

Department initiates cross-CEU interdisciplinary discussion on Disaster Management studies

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy and the ISEPEI Project organize a series of open lectures on Disaster Management and Risk Reduction.

ISEPEI Announces Call for Applications for 2017 Summer Workshops

ISEPEI has opened the Call for Applications for its upcoming "Bridging ICTs and Environment" workshops in July 2017. The events aim to improve data-driven decision-making by keeping professionals worldwide up-to-date on the latest advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their potential use in a wide variety of public policy applications.

The workshops, which will be held at Central European University in Budapest, will highlight the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in crucial environmental fields, such as Water and Disasters:

From the satellite navigation system in our cars to the weather forecast to basic Internet research, we rely on space technology and data for vital tasks in our daily lives. “Even if you might not think about it, you use the benefits of space technology,” said Lorant Czaran, programme officer for the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs at a Sept. 26 lecture at CEU, sponsored by the Environmental Systems Laboratory.
