In partnership with the Malawi Department of Parks and Wildlife, Prof. Brandon Anthony and Jolly Wasambo (PhD student) undertook field research in August 2009 to assess the extent of wildlife damage experienced by communities living adjacent to the Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, and how this is affecting rural livelihoods. Utilizing village-based meetings and participatory mapping, the researchers are expected to report their findings later this year, which will be used to develop mitigation strategies for both the reserve and its neighbours.

Brandon Anthony is a contributing author to 'Elephant Management: A Scientific Assessment for South Africa', which aims to evaluate the large amount of information regarding South African elephants and provide a clear, scientific picture of the state of our current knowledge at multiple scales: small- medium- and large conservation areas. This assessment will also identify and evaluate the policy and management options while including economic agendas, and socio-cultural aspirations, including those of rural communities which often bear the direct costs of damage caused by elephants.
