Preparation of the Fourth Assessment Report on Climate Change 2007 of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change . Chapter 6: Mitigation options in residential and commercial buildings
Announced on Friday, October 12, the Nobel Peace Prize 2007 awarded to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Albert Gore "for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change". Making an announcement, Ole Danbolt Mjoes, the chairman of the Nobel committee, said : "Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the IPCC has created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming... Thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries have collaborated to achieve greater certainty as to the scale of the warming."
We are proud to be a part of the IPCC Nobel Peace Prize-winning Team. The Nobel Prize recognizes the challenge of climate change which will affect many aspects of the human kind and will threaten the global peace. We believe, however, that the global society, our countries, and each of us can make it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at no or low costs stabilizing the climate and contributing to the solutions of other arising societal problems and, thus, making our world better and safer.

Contribution of the Department
The Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy is contributing in preparation of the Chapter for the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Chapter focuses on carbon mitigation options for residential and commercial buildings. The task at CEU is being carried out under the leadership of Dr. Diana Ürge-Vorsatz who has been appointed as one of the two Chapter Coordinating Lead Authors. Dr. Ürge-Vorsatz is also the author of the Summary for Policymakers and the Executive Summary of the IPCC Working Group III on Mitigation and the Expert Reviewer of this Group. Aleksandra Novikova is one of the Lead Authors of this chapter. Silvia Rezessy and Sonja Koeppel contributed the background research for the chapter.
The problem of global climate change is undoubtedly recognized as being among the most insuperable barriers to sustainability. Since 1990 leading scientists prepare a Report on a regular basis containing scientific, technical and socio-economic assessments of the climate change process, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation under the aegis of the IPCC. The Working Group III of the Panel examines the available information arising from human activities. Within this frame Chapter 6 of the forthcoming IVth Report concentrates on the mitigation options that can be achieved due to efficient end-use in buildings.
