CIVICA Public Lecture "Climate Change and the EU: From Evidence to Action" with Prof. Laszlo Pinter

Panelists

Carola Klöck is Assistant Professor of political science at Sciences Po’s Centre for International Research (CERI). Her work examines the politics of climate change negotiations, climate adaptation, and adaptation, all with a particular focus on small island states. She holds a PhD from ETH Zurich, and held positions at the Universities of Gothenburg, Antwerp and Göttingen before joining Sciences Po.

Sebastian Levi is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Sustainability of the Hertie School, conducting research on climate politics and public attitudes. Before joining the Hertie School, he completed an MPhil in International Relations at the University of Oxford, a PhD in Political Science at Freie Universität Berlin, and worked as a Visiting Assistant in Research at Yale University. In his research, he examines public attitudes on different climate policy instruments, the capacities of political institutions to organise emission neutrality, and the degree to which political environments shape public opinion across different countries.

László Pintér is Professor and Head of Department at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Policy at the Central European University (CEU) in Austria. He is also Senior Fellow and former Director of the Measurement and Assessment program at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in Canada. Pintér has been working on sustainable development indicators and strategies, integrated assessments, sustainability reporting and global outlooks for nearly three decades. He contributed, among others, to the negotiation of the sustainable development goals and conducts research on downscaling their implementation to the regional and local levels. He also researchers vulnerability, adaptation and resilience in socio-ecological systems. He works worldwide and regularly consults for a wide range of multilateral organisations, companies, NGOs and governments. Pintér holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota in the United States.

Swenja Surminski is Deputy Director and Head of Adaptation Research at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, part of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), overseeing social science research projects on climate adaptation, disaster risk finance with a focus on insurance, and Loss and Damage of climate change. She is a contributing author to the IPCC and the EU Science for Disaster Risk Management Report, and lead author of the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment. Surminski works closely with industry and policymakers and was appointed Visiting Academic at the Bank of England in 2015 to work on the regulator’s first report on climate change and the insurance industry (PDF). She is Associate Principal at Vivid Economics and regularly provides consulting services to public and private institutions. She is also an Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and has a visiting teaching role on Risk Governance at the Technical University of Darmstadt. She received a PhD in Political Science from Hamburg University for her work on ‘Climate Change and the Insurance Industry’ in 2002.

Moderator

Dalal Mawad is an independent award-winning journalist. She is currently freelancing as a senior producer for CNN in Paris and teaching a class in video journalism at Sciences Po. She worked for two years as a Senior Producer and Correspondent with the Associated Press. Her work largely focused on the MENA region. Her AP bylines have been published in the Washington Post and New York Times. She is the winner of the Samir Kassir Award for the Freedom of the Press in 2020. Mawad has previously worked as a Regional Video Producer for the United Nations Refugee Agency covering displacement in the Middle East and the world. Previous to her work at the UN, she was an on-air reporter with LBCI, a Lebanese broadcaster, where she mainly covered human rights, gender-based violence and environmental issues. Mawad has a Master’s degree in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics and another Master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University in New York.

In the CIVICA Public Lecture Series Tours d'Europe, researchers from CIVICA universities present their recent findings and interrogations on timely topics to the general public. The series aims to strengthen citizens' knowledge base and to facilitate a direct dialogue between social science researchers and the wider society.
