Anna Varfolomeeva's reflections on the Doctoral Program (2019)

I graduated from the Department of Nationalism Studies at CEU in 2012, and after that worked as a visiting researcher at Uppsala Centre for Russian and Eurasian Studies in Sweden with a project on state policies towards indigenous peoples in Sweden and Russia. While in Sweden, I witnessed Sami protests against the iron ore mine in the north of the country, and this experience sparked my interest in indigenous relations with mining industry.

Dear alumni,

I would like to thank all of you who managed to join us for the Anniversary conference and reunion. Nearly 100 departmental alumni were present, which is a very good result. I hope that all of you enjoyed it as much as faculty and staff did.

Csaba Pusztai, graduated in 2011, is a Postdoctoral Fellow at UNU-IAS, Yokohama, Japan

Csaba Pusztai came to CEU with an academic background in economics and business. Having already gathered several years of teaching experience in Hungarian tertiary education, he decided to seek a more research intensive role after earning his PhD in 2011. In 2012 he joined the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies in Yokohama, Japan as a Postdoctoral Fellow. At UNU-IAS, he is in the Sustainable Urban Futures program pursuing an individual research agenda as well as contributing to the team effort.

CEU Graduates Lead a Series of Environmental Activism Workshops in Russia

In Moscow this July, three CEU graduates served as organizers and activism coaches as part of the Strelka Institute of Design’s “Building a Green Campus” summer university workshop. Peter Kiryushin, (CEU ENVSCI’12) originally pitched the idea of the workshop to Strelka Institute’s management, and was assisted by Lea Bambach (ENVSCI’12) and Logan Strenchock (CEU Environmental and Sustainability Officer, ENVSCI’12) in designing the interactive course content.

In 2008 when I came to CEU to enroll in the PhD program in Environmental Sciences and Policy I already had a few years of research experience at my home university in Spain – the University of Alcala (Madrid). There I got my first and second degrees (a BSc- and an MSc-equivalent in Environmental Sciences with a specialization in Environmental Economics) and gained my first professional experience as a researcher.
