Abstract: The lecture gives an overview of the UN Environment’s efforts to enhance institutional and human capacities towards effectively integrating and implementing the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the regional and country levels through engagements in regional intersectoral policy platform on environment and health issues, and the cooperative work – One UN – of the UN System in the region bringing different perspectives into one coherent message to address key development challenges. The lecture will also include an overview of preparations for the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment “UN Environment Assembly” under the theme “Towards a Pollution-Free Planet” from 4-6 December 2017 and will demonstrate the opportunities for Non-Governmental Stakeholders to engage with UN Environment in this context.
Presenters: Wondy is principally responsible for the development, management and implementation of regional partnership and outreach activities on sustainable development issues in cooperation with governments, sister UN agencies and a wide-range of civil society organizations. He leads and coordinates UN Environment's work in the areas of Environment and Health, Education for Sustainable Development, Gender, UN Inter-Agency partnership, and the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in the European region. He pioneered UN Environment's flagship youth magazine, contributed to a number of sport and sustainable development publications, served as member of the Sport and Environment Commission of the IOC and the UN Secretary-General’s Inter-Agency Task Force on Sport for Development and Peace. He is a strong advocate and believer in the power of education and young people to make a positive difference in the world.
Alexander Juras, Chief of UN Environment’s Civil Society Unit, located in Nairobi, Kenya, and in charge for facilitating the engagement of UN Environment with Civil Society will be present during the event to answer questions of the audience. Before joining the United Nations Environment Programme in 2018, Alexander was for many years the Deputy Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe and the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia.
