Powering Past Coal Alliance: the Drivers, the Climate Impact and the Potential for Expansion of the first ‘Climate Club'
The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) was launched by the UK and Canada in November 2017 and joined by some 30 countries which pledge to phase out coal-fired power generation. Professor Cherp will analyse the climate impact of the alliance, why countries join it and what is the likelihood of it extending to a larger number of countries. He will explain the political-economic theories behind this research and its methods which include analysis of worldwide database of coal power plants, climate-energy scenarios, and statistical regressions involving energy demand, import dependence, government effectiveness and other characteristics. The research is within the wider agenda of studies of political economy on energy transitions.
